Inaugural Regular Internship Program
Under the guidance of Professor D. B. Phatak, Computer Science Department, IIT Bombay
Last date of application submission for Internship is 21
We undertake a significant amount of software and hardware development work in our Affordable Solutions Lab, to support our efforts in the National Mission on Education through ICT. Over the last three years, we have taken hundreds of summer interns to work on these projects. Apart from fulfilling their academic requirements, our students have benefited immensely through the rich IIT experience.
This year, for the first time after many years, we are attempting to cater to the academic requirement of a full semester project in a limited manner. We are trying a pilot program with a very limited number of seats. Depending on the demand (and success of the program), we will consider expanding the program next year.
Google India has generously agreed to sponsor
the expenses in our pilot and will also provide projects for some of the interns. The certificate will be issued by IIT Bombay and will mention them as sponsors.
All the work under the mission project is released under Open Source.
You will be given ample opportunity to learn the open source tools and software required by the project. We expect you to be a fast learner and become productive in a short time. Your project leader will evaluate your work at the end of the internship. We expect everyone to work hard, and successfully complete the assignments well in advance of the last date.
You have to strictly adhere to the time slots. Requests to adjust the time slot will not be entertained.
You will have to make your own arrangement to stay near the campus as rooms are not likely to be available.
We will extend nominal financial support which is designed to cover part of your expenses during your stay in IIT. Further details of the terms and conditions are available under the subsection 'Financials'. The program will be in fulfilment of the BE/MCA project work required by your institute and you have to make sure that it is accepted by your institute. The minimum duration of the program is 17 weeks (4 months) extendable (preferably) upto 26 weeks (6 months). The program will begin earliest on 1st January 2014 and everyone has to report latest by end of February. Interns who are willing to work for 6 months will be preferred as the projects are quite complex. IIT will provide you library reading room facility, and limited access to Gymkhana facilities. A certificate will also be issued on successful completion of internship. Kindly note that Prof Phatak does not give any recommendation letter for admission to Institutions outside India.

Students graduating in Computer Science/ Computer Engineering/IT/Computer Application or MCA/M.Tech.
Who are in their final year of the BE/B.Tech/MCA/M.Tech program.
Students who have undergone summer internship with us will be preferred.
Students who are willing to work for greater period (upto 26 weeks) will get preference.
Internship should be your Academic requirment.
Candidates will be selected based on their academic performance in their college/university, and on their technical accomplishments. Students who have demonstrated a flair for software and hardware design and development work, will be preferred. The reputation of the college and the performance of past students of that college may also be taken into account.
Based on the scrutiny, a list of candidates provisionally selected will be published first.
Any additional information, if required, will be sought from the provisionally selected candidates. The final list will be published by 28th October 2013 to allow students to make necessary arrangements. These students will then be required to submit scanned copies of the following documents before 15th November 2013:
A recommendation letter signed by a faculty member of your department
A letter from your HoD/Principal/Director stating that the college permits the student to undertake the internship during the chosen period.
The number of internship positions available is limited. We normally receive a large number of applications. Please provide as much information about your technical and other skills, as possible. Note that you are required to apply on-line in the prescribed format on or before 21st October 2013. No separate application through letter or email will be entertained.
Internship and stay at IIT Bombay involves some expenditure to be incurred by interns. The approximate amounts are:
Rs. 15000/- to be paid to the IIT Bombay academic office (Internship Fee's)
Approximately Rs. 100/- per day for food (breakfast, lunch, dinner) in the vacation mess
Of these, we will pay Rs. 15000/- directly to the institute, on your behalf. In addition, we will pay you an honorarium of Rs. 4000/- per month. Please note that since this amount will be paid at the end, you will have to make your own arrangements to meet the lodging and food expenses initially.
In this first inaugural year, we are offering only one large project. IIT Bombay has entered into an MOU with EDX to offer courses on their platform with first four free courses due next summer. EDX has released their platform (comprising 3.8 million lines) in open source. IIT Bombay has undertaken a challenging project to modify/enhance/extract their platform to implement a hybrid learning model which supports online content delivery backed up by hands-on mentoring/assessment at identified centres. By January, we would have frozen the requirements and would have a fairly good idea of the work involved. By the time the internship completes, we would be ready to deploy our solution in the Indian environment. The interns would be part of a larger team of programmers.
In addition to this, Google India will also sponsor work for their education related programs. These will be communicated to selected candidates.
We are also considering a proposal from MFE (Motivation For Excellence) foundation (courtesy: our alumnus Avinash Manudhane) to enhance the Khan Academy open source software to support content from other sources.
The allocation of projects will be done after the selection of interns.
